  • HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF AGRICULTURAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT

What is known today as the Agricultural Services Department (the erstwhile Services department) of Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority is an offshoot from the Operations and Maintenance department. It was upgraded to a full fledge department in 2011 having existed as a unit. The birth of the department was premised on government’s directive to the River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) to concentrate their activities on Irrigation and hiring of tractors, hence, the department was to render only irrigation/tractor hiring related services to the general public.

Following the determination of the present administration to diversify the economy and return to agriculture and ensure food security, the Honourable Minister of Water Resources during the inauguration of the present Management of RBDAs emphasized on the renewed vision of the Federal government on agriculture and the need for them to return to their earlier mandate of full participation in agricultural production, hence, the rebirth of Agricultural Services department in January 2017, to conform with the renewed mandate of the Authority.

Presently, the department is one of the four operational departments of the Authority, headed by an Executive Director who ensures the smooth running of the day-to-day activities and reports to the Managing Director. It is presently endowed with 28 number personnel workforce from different academic disciplines and backgrounds, experiences and skills, it is subdivided into the following units:

    • Agricultural Services Division
    • Commercial Services Division and
    • Integrated Water Resources Management
