To ensure the smooth running of an organization, there is need for someone to take up the leadership role of being at the helm of affairs of that organization, thus, the creation of the office of the Chief Executive i.e. the Managing Director at Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority, Minna. This office which is the Apex and responsible for the day to day running of the Authority is as old as when the Authority was established in 1976 known as Niger River Basin Development Authority. The Chief Executive of the Authority was initially referred to as the General Manager. Chief M.S Ayinmodu was the pioneer General Manager in the year 1976. The title was later changed to Managing Director late 1990 on signing the Technical Committee on Privatization and Commercialization Agreement (TCPC) with Engr. I.k Musa being the first Managing Director.
Appointment into the office of the Managing Director is made by the President and Commander- in- Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for a four year term. Though, the appointment is renewable at the expiration of the first tenure. Since inception, the Authority has had twelve (12) General Managers/Managing Directors with two (2) in Acting capacities. The present Managing Director is Prof. Muhammed Abdulkarim Ali who took over the mantle of leadership on January, 2017.
